The Internet Rub

~Poetry~

The Internet

It’s virtually infinite
Go pilgrimage to a library
Pick up a book
Read it, even re-read it
Eventually though you understand the story
You reach the last page
You put it down
You may mull it over for a time
To assimilate the information
But eventually, the experience ends
You can be free
Your attention is released
You can go back home
In contrast
The internet is an endless ocean
Always always an endless stream of more
You never get the full story
There’s no conclusion
No end
No freedom
A billion voices all chambered
Echo their haunting chorus
Yesterdays news stuck on replay
Living in the palm of your hand
On the train
On the couch
On the can
Its even in your bed
There’s no space to be
Worse yet the model we’ve made
Advertisements profits our attention
Profits drive exploitation
Now our attentions high jacked
Held hostage for a ransom
Only you can never pay enough
To buy back your freedom
It belongs to them now
You belong to them now
They will do with you as they wish
Buy this
Want this
Need this
We don’t even see the master
Yet feel the sting of the whip
Lashing out upon our very souls
Until we’re hollowed shells
Only here to consume
Whatever in hell
Is stuffed in our faces
Always hungry for more
But finding the meal never satisfies
It’s just dust and echoes
Empty filth
Made only to reap profit
And be discarded
Buried in the earth
Along with all the other trash
Just as you
Just as I
Rubbed out of life itself
